You Can Classify Matter

This last two weeks in Science, we having been learning about what Matter is and that we can classify and describe matter by using physical properties. We classified the contents of our desk, brought in items from home & around the classroom and sorted them by shape, color, texture, size, metal or not, solids, liquids, things that hold something inside or not, etc.

We also made the connection that matter is a noun.

Time Capsule

The first week of school we took some time to get to know our classmates, get our desk and supplies set up for the year, and we created a ............TIME CAPSULE!! 

For the time capsule, we listed our current favorites and measured the length of our arm, leg, waist, height, and head. This of course was a blast for everyone!

The time capsules are hidden in the classroom. We will revisit them at the end of the year to see how much each student has grown through out the year.

These will be sent home at the end of the year as well.

Mulicultural Day 2012

Urvika was the only 2nd grade student to participant in our Multicultural Day representing the country of India. She danced beautifully and is very talented! We saw both of her fabulous dance performances. I am so proud of you Urvika. I wish I could dance as gracefully as you.

Measurement Fun

We started our unit of measurement with learning about feet.

We read the book, "How Big is a Foot?" Then we got to experiment making a 6 ft by 3 ft bed for the queen.

We learned that:

• if you use your own foot to measure with, then everyone's bed is a different size. This is why using our own foot is not an accurate measure of a foot because everyone has different sized feet.

AND...

• a foot is 12 inches long or a ruler length.

And

• a good benchmark for a foot on our body is from our elbow to our fist.

When then experimented measuring with square units to find the area of a object.

We learned that:

• you have to measure all the space inside the figure. If you forget any space then you will not have an accurate measurement.
• area is measured in square units.
• it is very important to measure with the same unit or your measurement will be off.
